AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn freshman Sydney Shaw was named SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s basketball, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Shaw, a 5-9 guard from Miami, has been among the SEC’s best point guards through the non-conference portion of the season. Last week, in Auburn’s lone contest against North Florida, Shaw scored 14 points along with four assists and four steals while also hitting 3-of-5 3-point attempts.
With 3.8 assists per game this year, Shaw currently ranks ninth in the SEC in assists per game; that number puts her tops among league freshmen. Over her last four games, she is averaging 12.3 points and 5.3 assists, and she is shooting 50 percent (10-20) from 3-point range.
This is the first SEC weekly award of the season for Auburn and the first of Shaw’s career.
Auburn (10-2) begins SEC play Thursday night on the road when they travel to Ole Miss. Game time is 6 p.m. CT at the SJB Pavilion in Oxford, Miss.
